Tennessee man faces felonies in pursuit

NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, Texas – A Tennessee man who led Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office deputies on a pursuit through multiple school zones and counties Tuesday now faces multiple felony charges. Christopher Michael Chaney, 41, of Ashley City, Tennessee, was booked into the Nacogdoches County jail on a second-degree felony for possession of a controlled substance; third-degree felonies for evading arrest with a vehicle, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a controlled substance and tampering with physical evidence; and a state-jail felony for possession of marijuana. His bonds totaled $90,000 combined for the six charges. He was still jailed as of Thursday afternoon. A deputy on patrol near the Central Heights school zone in the 10,000 block of U.S. 259 attempted to pull Chaney over for
speeding and an obscured license plate around 7:15 a.m. Cheney, who was driving south in a 2020 Toyota compact car, fled, at times reaching speeds of 120 mph.
NCSO deputies, Nacogdoches Police Department officers, and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers pursued Chaney southbound on the loop. He turned off at the State Highway 7 exit, then doubled back and headed north again. He turned
onto U.S. 59 and continued fleeing towards Garrison. As the pursuit continued, Chaney was observed throwing several items from the vehicle along U.S. 59.
Shelby County law enforcement was contacted as the chase extended through Timpson and onto State Highway 87 before ending near the intersection with FM 415 in Shelby County when Chaney surrendered to law enforcement. Deputies retraced the route, and found suspected methamphetamine, prescription pills and a firearm. When Cheney’s vehicle was searched, an additional 1.8 lbs of marijuana was discovered in two packages. Cheney told deputies he had thrown the illegal drugs from the vehicle during the pursuit because he knew he was in Texas where the laws were strict. The Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Nacogdoches Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, Precinct One Constable’s Office, and Shelby County authorities for their assistance in this incident.
