SFA Softball Wins Series 2-1 Over Cardinals

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks wrapped up their three-game series with Incarnate Word.  SFA lost game one today, before winning game two. 

Game 1

The Cardinals got the scoring started in game one, after Baylee Lemons hit a RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning.  Mackenzie Bennett’s RBI double would even up the score, as Mallory Webb was able to cross home plate.  The score was tied 1-1, in the bottom of the first.  The Cardinals would take the lead in the third inning, following another Baylee Lemons RBI.  In the seventh inning, Hope Lusk laid a textbook bunt that allowed Sydney Carithers to score and tie the game. Madison Guillen and Avalone Sanchez both hit eighth inning RBIs that allowed the Cardinals to win game one 4-2.  Alexis Telford pitched all eight innings, recording six strikeouts, giving up four runs on six hits.  The Lumberjacks fall to 7-11, after game one.

Game 2

In game two, scoring was a bit slower at the start.  Emily Berryhill’s RBI single scored Arwin Callaway and gave the Lumberjacks the early lead, in the bottom of the third. Shortly after, Mallory Webb scored on a wild pitch, giving Stephen F. Austin a 2-0 lead at the end of the third.  Mikaelah Burkland would tack onto the Lumberjack lead, with a RBI double that scored Madison Nguyen in the bottom of the fourth.  The Cardinals would cut the contest to 3-4 in the top fifth inning, following RBIs from Victoria Altamiran, Baylee Lemons, and Avalone Sanchez. Going into extra innings, Hope Lusk would be the savior. Lusk hit a sacrifice RBI that scored Emily Land in an eighth inning walkoff fashion. Sophie Hannabas pitched two innings, recorded a strikeout, and improved her record to 3-2. The Lumberjacks are now 9-11 on the year.

The Lumberjacks will take on the Prairie View A&M Panthers on March 14th.  It will be a double header at the SFA Softball Field.  Game one will start at 3:00, followed by game two at 5:30.
