Nacogdoches Arts Collaborative News for June 2025

Unleash Creativity at NAC Kids Theatre & Art Camps!

This summer, NAC Kids is offering two exciting opportunities for young artists and performers! The NAC Kids Theatre Camp will be held at Lamplite Theatre from July 21-25 and July 28-August 1, with performances on August 2. This two-week camp is perfect for children entering grades 3-9, giving them the chance to explore both acting and technical theater. Campers can choose to focus on acting, tech, or both, making it an ideal full-day experience for those who want to dive deep into the world of theatre. The cost is $135 for a half-day and $270 for a full day, with discounts available for additional siblings.

The NAC Kids Art Camp takes place August 4-8 at 141 Walker Street, offering a variety of sessions tailored to different age groups:  Ages 3-5: 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM; Ages 6-8: 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM; Ages 9-11: 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM; Ages 12-16: 4:30 PM – 7:00 PM

The camp is $125 per student, with discounts for additional siblings, and culminates in a gallery show on August 9th at the Falling Star Gallery at 415 North Fredonia Street, Suite 307, where campers can showcase their creations. Full details can be found on our website or social media pages. Don’t miss out on these fantastic opportunities to spark your child’s creativity this summer!

JUNE ARTIST SPOTLIGHT – Meet Elton Scifres!

Elton Scifres is a retired business professor from SFA where he taught courses in managerial strategy for many years. But his favorite hobby was photography, and in the beginning, it was just for fun. “I had an SLR. I’d take vacation photos and shots of the kids, but I didn’t have the urge to learn more. Twenty years ago, when film formats began to make way for digital photography, I got interested in the new tech and suddenly, I realized I could experiment all I wanted for free. And I got serious about taking pictures.”

Today Elton serves as president of the Nacogdoches Photography Club, an organization he’s been active in for a long time. “I’ve dabbled in a variety of genres, but landscapes dominate my portfolio. I like taking a familiar image, something everybody knows, like the Eiffel Tower or the Grand Canyon, but somehow putting my own spin on it– avoiding cliché– but seeing a detail that others miss.” His passion has brought him recognition and awards.  Elton has been official photographer at our last two Art Balls as well.

Elton is married to NAC board member Sharon Scifres, a talented photographer and watercolorist (profiled in this column in December 2024) and together they are sharing their artistic vision in a joint art show called “Union” opening on June 12 at Falling Star Gallery. “Some of our work is paired up side-by-side; there’s my photograph and then next to it is Sharon’s painting of the same image.”

“We have known each other since we were teenagers in Mississippi, and although we have always encouraged each other’s creativity, this is our first joint exhibition, so we’re really excited. Thanks to the NAC for sponsoring our show. Now that we’re retired, we both have time to create art. And truthfully, while I’m always trying to use the tools I have to improve my images, I love nothing more than taking pictures of our four grandkids. Love those smiles.”
