91 Years Old
Obituary
Marie Kimbro, age 91, of Nacogdoches, passed away on July 31, 2023, after recent health issues. Daughter-in-Love, Connie Lindsey, was by her side.
Alice Marie Maddox was born October 26th, 1931, in Cameron, Texas to Charles Grady Maddux and Sarah Estrelle (Harwell) Maddux. She was the youngest of three children with an older brother and sister to look after her. Shortly after graduation she married her high school sweetheart, James White Davis. To this union was born James (Jim/Jimmy) Curtis Davis – her pride and joy!
Following work that led the family to Houston and Lubbock, Marie worked for the Litton Company in Lubbock where some of the first microwave ovens were produced. She was proud to be associated with that major technology that changed the lives of women across the country. Marie found herself single and moved to Nacogdoches in the late 1970’s where she worked at Stephen F. Austin State University in the electronics department. Her position at Litton helped pave the way for her support position at SFA working for Basil Barbee and others in the Maintenance Building.
She met and made lifelong friends at SFA and it was there that she found James Kimbro. She and James married in 1982 and throughout their marriage they took many trips to see friends a family around Texas and the United States. One of their favorite family events was the Hawkins Family Reunion held between Granbury and Glenrose on the banks of the Brazos River.
Marie retired from SFA in 1996 and could finally spend as much time as she wanted sprucing up her home with beautiful landscaping and patio flowers. She loved Soduko and all things cards, but especially 42 (dominoes). Marie and James’ home was open to everyone with frequent gatherings on Friday or Saturday to wind down and visit with friends (old and new).
Retirement also had its challenges. Surviving a brain tumor and serious foot break in her seventies and eighties, Marie was always resilient and grateful for the health she had and never felt sorry for herself. Her trust in God and her caregivers gave her many years of a long, well lived life.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, husband James Kimbro, son Jim Davis and her beloved Pekinese, Stormie.
She is survived by step-daughter Barbara Ann Hawkins and other members of the Hawkins family, daughter-in-law Dena Davis, Chosen Kids: Connie Lindsey, Jimmy Phillips, Andy Mitchell and Sandy Barnett, and a multitude of friends and admirers. Marie loved cats later in life and was blessed to have the last 10 years with Buzzie, Jasper and Callie who were all re-homed these last few weeks.
Marie’s loved ones wish to thank the nursing staff at Harbor Hospice and the caregivers and nursing staff at Stallings Court Nursing & Rehab. The family is grateful for her friends Wanda and Pam who helped with home care this past spring and summer. And a special thanks to Brenda Yoachum – a thoughtful and protective caregiver who helped with the Cat Pack, home care and anything else that was needed.
The Visitation and Funeral Service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Nacogdoches. Visitation begins at 1:00pm and Funeral at 2:00pm followed by a graveside service at Fairview Cemetery. Friends of Marie’s (and James) are encouraged to attend and celebrate this sweet life and share memories.
