Obituary
Lyndel David Smith, age 81, passed away Saturday, August 13, 2022 in Nacogdoches, Texas. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Patsy Price Smith, and his three daughters and their families Tanya and Gary Shelton, Gina and Chris Oglesbee, and Vicki Smith. “Pop” leaves behind his beloved grandchildren Kristen and Dylan Ederer and great grandson Shipley, James David “Jim” Oglesbee, and Samantha Shelton. He also has three bonus grandsons Andy, Adam, and Alex Shelton.
David was born September 9, 1940 in the small community of Edhube, Texas to Willie A. and Sallie Jo Tarpley Smith. He was the sixth of eleven children. At an early age, he picked cotton and farmed with his family. The Smiths attended Edhube Baptist Church where David was baptized in a service with several of his siblings. David attended school in the early years in Edhube and really did walk to school and back each day, sometimes bare-footed. As a tall, athletic child, he excelled in basketball and baseball and had the nicknames “Burr” because of his haircut and “Head” because he stood a head above everyone else.
David was a 1959 graduate of Bonham High School. After high school, he began his career in banking at the Merchants and Planters Bank in Sherman, Texas. David and Patsy married February 20, 1960 at the Christian Church in Ravenna, Texas and began their family a couple of years later. They moved back to Bonham, Texas and attended the First Christian Church where David served as a Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. David’s career in banking brought the family to several locations throughout Texas and finally to San Augustine, where he retired as President of First National Bank.
David was active in the communities where he resided, and he volunteered in leadership positions. He served on the Bonham ISD School Board, President of Bonham Jaycees, President of San Augustine Lion’s Club, and President of Crown Colony Men’s Golf Association in Lufkin, Texas.
David loved golf – playing, watching, and discussing it. He and Patsy retired to Crown Colony Country Club and traveled extensively in the United States to play golf. He loved most of all to be with his family and was the biggest fan of his grandchildren’s sports and activities.
David was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws Dovie and Earl Price, brothers Dale, Glenn, Joe, Wetzel, and Mike Smith, and sisters Sue King and Linda Rogers. In addition to his wife Patsy and family herein, he is survived by his sisters Ann Brown Pitcock and Sherrill and husband Vince Hash, and youngest brother Ronnie and wife Shari, and spouses of his siblings, Kenneth King, Paula Smith, Linda Smith, Billy Rogers, and Glenda Smith and numerous adored nieces and nephews.
