NACOGDOCHES, Texas– Head football coach Colby Carthel and the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks added three new members to their staff. David Mackie, Randy Martinez, and Garrett Graf will all be joining SFA for their 2024 season.
Garrett Graf joins the Lumberjacks as their new offensive line coach. He spent a year as the Colorado State University Pueblo co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Prior to his time in Colorado, he spent four seasons as the offensive line coach and run game coordinator on Bill Maskill’s staff at Midwestern State University, which is a member of the Lone Star Conference. Prior to working at Midwestern State, he spent two seasons as a graduate assistant offensive line coach at his alma mater, the University of Texas.
David Mackie begins his first year at SFA as the coach for the Lumberjack’s defensive “Jokers” unit. Mackie comes from Troy where he spent two seasons as a defensive analyst. Prior to joining Troy, he had a two-year stint at Louisiana Tech, where he served as the Bulldogs’ safeties coach in 2021 after working as the defensive analyst/assistant linebackers coach in 2020.
Mackie came to the Bulldogs after spending the 2019 season at Hampton as the safeties coach and co-special teams coordinator. Prior his time at Hampton, Mackie was at East Carolina from 2015-18. In 2018, he was the senior defensive analyst and mentored the nickel position in an off-the-field role.
In 2016 and 2017, he worked as the defensive quality control coordinator while assisting the outside linebackers and safeties. Prior to being the defensive quality control coordinator, Mackie worked as the special team’s quality control in 2015. Mackie served as cornerbacks coach and video coordinator at Georgia Military College in 2014. Before his appointment in Milledgeville, he coached the defensive backs, was the head strength coach and the special team’s coordinator for Hardaway (Ga.) High School from 2010 to 2013. While directing Hardaway’s strength program, he earned his USA Weightlifting certification.
Mackie graduated from Georgia in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in history and followed with a master’s in business administration from Troy in 2010. He also earned secondary history education certification from Columbus State.
Randy Martinez will start his first season at SFA as the Lumberjack’s new running backs coach. Prior to joining the Lumberjacks, he spent a year as the recruiting operations coordinator for Texas State football (2023). An established high school coach, Martinez helped the Bobcats with all aspects of recruiting, including on-campus visits, coordinating travel, and evaluation of prospects.
Prior to Texas State, Martinez was the special teams coordinator, running backs/tight ends coach, and recruiting coordinator for Duncanville High School (TX) from 2021 to 2022. He helped Duncanville win the 6A Division I state championship in 2022. Martinez was the tight ends coach, pass game coordinator and recruiting coordinator at Red Oak High School (TX) from 2019 to 2021.
The native Texan started his career as a student assistant coach at Sam Houston State, working with the offensive line (2017-18) and tight ends (2018-19). Martinez is a graduate of Sam Houston State with a degree in business administration.
