NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks Basketball Team (10-2, 1-1) comes off an eight-day holiday break as they return home to the Sawmill to open a four-game homestand as they host the visiting Texas A&M-University San Antonio Jaguars (10-4, 7-3) in a Sunday matinee matchup.
Ladyjacks at a Glance:
The Ladyjacks are returning home at a perfect time, not just because of the holiday season, but also because they are riding a three-game win streak into the Sawmill and are coming off participating in the San Diego Classic that saw SFA leave the San Diego Classic as the only team to go undefeated as they recorded wins over San Diego State and Colorado State to post a flawless 2-0 record. The Ladyjacks will look to carry over their offensive momentum from the Classic as they posted at least 80 points in both wins, as they look to end non-conference play for the 2024-25 season with a bang against the Jaguars. The success to begin this season for SFA has not come without recognition as SFA is only one of only two Southland schools ranked in the top-100 in the NET RPI Rankings as SFA is currently ranked at 55, which puts them ahead of schools such as Villanova, Florida, Texas Tech, Clemson, and Penn State.
Jaguars at a Glance:
The Jaguars travel to the Pineywoods to open up a three-game road trip looking to build off a successful start to the season as they have posted a 10-4 record to start the season. The Jaguars have been no strangers to Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) play this season as they have already amassed 10 conference games played this season, posting a strong 7-3 conference record so far. The Jaguars have had success both home and away this year as they have posted winning records in both home and away records, as they look to expand on their road success during this three-game road trip.
Scouting Report:
The Ladyjacks offense is a perfect blend of efficiency and aggressiveness as four different Ladyjack starters average double-digit points/game for SFA. Faith Blackstone has been a knock-down shooter for the ‘Jacks as she leads the team averaging a healthy 15.8 points/game while Ashlyn Traylor-Walker is on the heels of a 27-point explosion against the CSU Rams to close out the San Diego Classic, which tied her career-high for points in a single game. Avery VanSickle has been the definition of efficiency for the Ladyjacks as she is shooting an impressive 50.88 percent from beyond the arc this season, which is good for fourth best among all players in the nation. Trinity Moore rounds out the high-powered SFA offense as she produces on both ends of the court at a high-level for SFA as she averages 11.6 points/game, while being pesky on defense with opposing shooters as she has blocked a team-high 17 shots this year.
Evelyn Lorenzo and Natalia Trevino have formed a dynamic 1-2 scoring punch for the Jaguars offense this season as both currently average over 18 points/game. Lorenzo has been excellent from the charity stripe this season as she has made 82 free-throws, while Trevino has been a effective shooter for the Jaguars as she has recorded a 44 percent field goal percentage. Maya Simon helps to form a three-way scoring machine for the Jaguars as she averages 11.9 points/game for Texas A&M-San Antonio.
Series:
Sunday afternoon’s matchup will feature the first ever meeting between these two intrastate opponents as SFA looks to continue their strong play at the Sawmill this season.
