Earlier tonight at the Nacogdoches City Council Meeting, a special recognition took place to honor Zach Smith. Smith, an Animal Services Attendant at the Nacogdoches Animal Shelter, was presented with a plaque and framed proclamation of bravery and recognition for service above and beyond the call of duty for actions Zach took earlier this month.
While out on a call to round up some stray dogs in a city neighborhood, Smith and his coworker were rushed by two very large and aggressive dogs. Zach took quick and thoughtless action to push her out of the way and shielded her with his own body, at great personal cost. Smith received numerous cuts, bruises and bites across his arms, legs and face before the attack ceased, but in doing so he protected his coworker from serious physical harm. Smith is currently recovering from his injuries but is back working with the animals he loves at the Nacogdoches Animal Shelter.
City Manager Rick Beverlin first presented Zach with a framed certificate to recognize his brave and selfless action, before Mayor Randy Johnson read aloud a proclamation to the assembled audience detailing Zach’s heroic actions and expressing the City’s appreciation of those acts.
Please join us in celebrating Zach’s selfless action and bravery in the line of duty!
