Gail Marrs Harper, 88, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on August 1st, 2026.
More than anything, Gail will be remembered for the quiet goodness of her heart. She was one of the kindest, gentlest, and most caring souls those who knew her were ever blessed to meet. Gail possessed an enduring beauty that reflected the kindness, grace, and gentleness that defined her life. Her greatest joy was her family, and her greatest satisfaction came from quietly caring for those she loved. She had a servant’s heart, finding happiness not in recognition but in caring for her family, her friends, her church, and those in need. She noticed the needs of others long before they asked for help, offering quiet encouragement, practical assistance, and unwavering love.
Born in Dawson and raised in Belmead, Texas, near Waco, Gail was the only daughter of Bert and Leola Marrs. She grew up with her three brothers in a close-knit family where weekends often included ten-cent movies and participation in the Methodist Church. Those early years helped shape the Christian faith, love of family, and spirit of service that would guide her throughout her life.
Gail graduated from La Vega High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Library Science from North Texas State University. During both high school and college, she was active in the Methodist Youth Fellowship.
Shortly after graduating from college, Gail met the love of her life, Bill Harper, at a USO dance in Dallas while Bill was serving in the United States Air Force. They were married on December 12th, 1959, and shared 57 years of marriage until Bill’s passing on May 9th, 2017. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, service, and enduring partnership.
Gail began her career as a librarian with the Dallas, Pasadena, and Houston library systems, where she especially enjoyed serving as a children’s librarian and leading children’s story time. She later brought her organizational talents to Vinson & Elkins, where she served as a records technician for 25 years until her retirement.
Gail and Bill created the retirement they always dreamed of in East Texas. On their picturesque farm, they enjoyed tending gardens and fruit trees, caring for cattle, dogs, and barn cats, and becoming deeply involved in their local Christian community. They continued to serve through lay leadership, Methodist conference participation, providing weekly altar flowers, and worshiping with several Protestant congregations in their community.
Together they devoted countless hours to serving others through ministries that included preparing hundreds of Christmas shoeboxes each year for seafarers at the Port of Houston, supporting the local children’s shelter, Boys Ranch, providing mosquito nets for families overseas, making pillowcase shirts and dresses for children in need, delivering food baskets to neighbors, and serving as Children’s Advocates in the Nacogdoches area.
An avid reader throughout her life, Gail also enjoyed crocheting and needlework, with several of her creations earning awards at local fairs. She and Bill delighted in making pear butter from fruit grown on their property, canning vegetables from their garden, and sharing both their harvest and their hospitality with family and friends.
Gail was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill Harper, and brothers. She is lovingly remembered by her children, William (Bill) Harper Jr., Shirley Harper Bernsen, and McKinley (Mike) Harper; her grandchildren, Cathryngail Harper Ramsey, Amanda Harper, Lindsay Bernsen Wardlaw, Jared Bernsen, and Connor Wade; thirteen great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members; and many dear friends who were blessed by the quiet goodness of her heart.
Gail’s family finds comfort in knowing that her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched through her quiet acts of kindness, her steadfast faith, and the unconditional love she shared so freely. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who were blessed to know her.
A Celebration of Gail’s Life will be held on Saturday, August 15th, 2026, at Garrison Funeral Home in Garrison, Texas. Family viewing will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by public viewing at 10:00 a.m. and the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will immediately follow at Concord Cemetery. Following the interment, family and friends are invited to join the family for lunch and fellowship at the Mt. Enterprise Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
