AUSTIN, Texas- Stephen F. Austin’s track and field team will be traveling to Austin, Texas to take part in the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The Lumberjacks will be traveling with four athletes that will compete in four different events.
A Look at the Qualifiers:
Branson Ellis– Ellis has been the definition of dominance this entire year. Ellis was recently named WAC Men’s Track and Field Athlete of the Year. He currently sits third overall for pole vault in the NCAA. Ellis punched his ticket to Austin, Texas, with his second-place finish (5.40m) last week in the Western Regionals. The NCAA pole vault championships will begin June 7 at 6:30 p.m.
Izac Canchola– Canchola will be competing in the javelin. Canchola had a big first throw (68.81m) in the Western Regionals that secured him 11th place and a spot in Austin. With his javelin throw of 69.02m, Canchola currently sits 42nd in the NCAA. The NCAA javelin championships will begin June 7 at 5:30 p.m.
Angel Richmore– Richmore was just shy of representing SFA in two separate events. Richmore fell just short of qualifying for the high jump in Austin, Texas. However, her prior school record heptathlon score (5691) was ranked 16th in the country and qualified her for the NCAA Championships. The NCAA heptathlon championships will begin June 9 at 2:45 p.m. with the 100m hurdles. Nissi Kabongo– Kabongo will be the last qualifying athlete that will represent SFA in the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Kabongo lit up the WAC throughout the outdoor season, taking first place victories in multiple events. She placed fifth at the Western Regionals, with her high jump of 1.82m. Kabongo also currently sits at 14th (1.83m) in the NCAA for high jump. The NCAA high jump championships will wrap up on June 10 at 7:30 p.m.
The NCAA Championships will begin June 7 and run through June 10. All four athletes have opportunities to earn either First or Second Team All-American.
