Obituary
Dr. Don Earl Fare, born October 15, 1933 in Houston, Texas, passed away on February 2, 2025, in Nacogdoches, Texas, after a brief illness. He was the son of Earl Rainey and Mary Ellen Fare and grew up in Houston and Abilene, Texas.
After serving in the Army, Don pursued higher education with determination and excellence. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Abilene Christian College (now Abilene Christian University), where he met Peggy Beard, who became his devoted wife of 68 years. He went on to achieve a masters and doctorate degree from Texas Tech University. Don’s first collegiate job was at Arizona State University. Don and Peggy eventually settled in Nacogdoches, where he joined the faculty at Stephen F. Austin State University as a professor in the elementary education department. He dedicated his career to inspiring future educators until his retirement.
Don was a quiet and gentle man known for his quick wit and passion for teaching. He had a deep love of reading, was a computer enthusiast, and found great joy in fostering a love of learning in others.
He is survived by his beloved wife Peggy Beard Fare of Nacogdoches; daughters Shelley Fare Brophy of Nacogdoches, Allyson Fare Hartt (Jim) of Marshall, and Julie Fare Madden of Lufkin; son Travis Fare of Austin; grandchildren Megan Hartt Ocampo (David), Mitchell Hartt (Lindsey), Chris Brophy, Madison Fare, and Mackenzie Madden; great-grandchildren Barrett, Cannon, and Remedy Hartt; nephew Clint Spurgeon; and niece JoEllen Spurgeon McConnell. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Elaine Fare Spurgeon; granddaughter Katherine (Katie) Allyson Brown; son-in-law William Brophy; and nephew Charles Spurgeon.
A private graveside memorial will be held with immediate family members. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Harvest House or The Nacogdoches Treatment Center.
