AUGUST 28, 1992 – JULY 12, 2026
In the Care of Laird Funeral Home
Cason Randyl Chittum, 33, of Nacogdoches, went to be with Jesus Sunday, July 12, 2026, after a lengthy illness. His passing leaves a hole in the hearts of his children, parents, loved ones, and friends.
Cason was born in Nacogdoches on August 28, 1992, to Richie and Melanie Chittum. He was born tough as nails as he was the third son, and toughness was a requirement. Cason had a high pain tolerance, and more than one incident proved this. Around the age of 2, his middle brother sprayed Raid in his eyes. His mother and grandmother held him under the water faucet for 15 minutes to wash out his eyes, and Cason never cried but remained calm. At the age of 5, he was attacked in the face by a dog. His nose was broken and the muscles underneath his skin were exposed but he never cried—even after 4 hours in the ER and multiple stiches. He was tough. Cason loved playing basketball and did so for Diboll High School. He was an excellent mechanic and could fix just about anything. Cason mostly worked in construction from his teenage years, and he loved building houses. At the age of 12, Cason was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, and he dealt with complications from that until the time of his death.
Life wasn’t always easy for Cason, and he made some bad decisions from which he suffered the consequences. In the last months of his life, he knew his need for a Savior. He increasingly, throughout the day and night, asked his Mama to pray for him. His Mama did so and did everything she could medically, physically, and spiritually to help him. After already losing vision in his right eye, Cason had a left below the knee amputation in June of 2025, due to osteomyelitis. This considerably and understandably dampened his spirit. Yet he joked to the nurses post-surgery that he was “gonna be a peg-leg pirate for Halloween.” Less than a month after losing his leg, he crashed the mother/daughter trip to Branson. He accompanied his Mama and aunts to Silver Dollar City where he tried to talk his way into riding rollercoasters. Surrounded by 3 mother hens, he was forbidden from doing that. He did ride a kiddie ride or two, and his Aunt Charlie videoed the ride. Joy is evident on his face throughout the ride. A few weeks before his passing, he was able to spend several days with his dad and stepmom. They took his to his happy place—Galveston Beach.
Cason was proceeded in death by his paternal grandfather, Francis Chittum; maternal grandfather, Eldon Benton; paternal grandmother and grandfather, Dora and Walter (Taxi) Hundley. Also proceeding his in death was his step-brother, Seth Eckman; and his cousin, Ashton Woods.
Cason was most proud of his children, a daughter, Cashlyn, and sons, Cater and Samuel, and they survive him. He is also survived by his father and step-mother, Richie and Sarah Chittum of LaMarque, Texas; his mother, Melanie Rojo, of Nacogdoches; brothers, Chad (Chaney) of Diboll, and Codee, of Nacogdoches; maternal grandmother, Mildred Benton of Nacogdoches; aunts, Charlotte Woods and Tracie (Jubal) Cannon, both of Nacogdoches, Jane Chamberlin of Friendswood, Robin (Tommy) Medlock of Dickinson; an uncle, Randy Stacy of Mont Belvieu; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews; much loved great aunts and uncles; special recognition to his friend, Lynzza; and the mothers of his children, Michelle and Clara.
Cason attended church with his mother at Community Apostolic of Nacogdoches, and this is where the visitation and funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2026. Visitation begins at 1:00pm for friends, and the service will begin at 2:00pm. Officiating the service will be Chad Chittum, Pastor Lawrence Powell, and Pastor Brent Crosswhite.
