NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Chris Campos converted a 51-yard field on the final play of the game to propel No. 22 Stephen F. Austin past Abilene Christian 41-38 in an instant classic from Homer Bryce Stadium.
The ‘Jacks have now won 12-in-a-row at home.
ACU attempted a 54-yard field with five seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and it fell short and into the hands of All-American Xavier Gipson. The Dallas native sprinted down the sidelines for a 51-yard return and ACU was flagged with a horse-collar tackle that resulted in a 15-yard personal foul. The ‘Jacks were then allowed one un-timed down.
SFA jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead. Jerrell Wimbley scored on a 10-yard run and Moe Redman scored on a five-yard pass from Trae Self. Miles Reed scored on a two-yard plunge at 12:31 in the second quarter and the ‘Jacks led 21-0.
At 10:48 in the third quarter Wimbley found paydirt again, this time gashing the ACU defense with a 30-yard touchdown.
Trae Self scored on a four-yard rush in the fourth quarter.
Self finished 21-for-33 with 243 passing yards and one passing touchdown and an interception. Gipson recorded nine receptions for 144 yards with a long of 48 yards.
Wimbley finished with a career-high 99 rushing yards on 12 carries for an average of 8.2 yards per rush.
Reigning WAC Defensive Player of the Week Myles Heard finished with a game-high nine tackles, while Triumphant Olatunji added eight and a half tackles and a key sack in the fourth quarter for a 17-yard loss.
SFA returns to action Saturday and plays host to Tarleton with kickoff slated for 6 p.m. at Homer Bryce Stadium.
