June 8, 2026 — P.M.: After further epidemiological investigation, the case previously reported in Andrews County has been reclassified as the first New World screwworm (NWS) case in New Mexico.
The veterinarian who reported the case is in Texas, but the dog resides at a household in Lea County, New Mexico. This is believed to be an isolated case.
June 8, 2026 — A.M.: Two additional cases of New World screwworm (NWS) have been confirmed in Texas — a calf in La Salle County and a dog in Andrews County.
Epidemiological investigations are ongoing for both cases. A veterinarian in Andrews County submitted the samples from the infested dog. Details on this case will be shared as they are available, but early reports indicate the dog was recently in Mexico.
June 5, 2026: New World screwworm (NWS) confirmation in Zavala County, 30 day-old-calf with an umbilical lesion.
June 3, 2026: Index Case — New World screwworm (NWS) confirmation in Zavala County, three-week-old calf with an umbilical lesion.
There are currently no further confirmed detections in animals in Texas. Additional detections or updated information will be provided in the form of situation updates posted to this page and social media.
