NACOGDOCHES, TX – The Stone Fort Museum on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University will host the Night Before Halloween History Party from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 30. The event will feature carnival games, refreshments, live music and a costume contest.

Student workers for the Stone Fort Museum on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University prepare for the Night Before Halloween History Party.

“This is a great way for families to kick off their Halloween festivities,” said Carolyn Spears, museum director. “Halloween has its roots in a Celtic harvest festival, and it emerged as a popular American holiday in the 1870s, so you can learn some Halloween history while you enjoy traditional fall carnival games.”

Games include bobbing ducks, a rubber band shooting gallery and a bottle toss. Local rock band, Sons of Atlantis with Joe Flynn, Nicholas Van Kley, Buddy Harpham, Andrew Bright and Mike Dyson, will perform at 7 p.m.

“If you’re feeling competitive, prizes will be awarded for ‘Best Overall’ and ‘Most Creative’ costumes,” Spears said. “Make sure your costume is family-friendly and PG-rated.”

To enter the all-ages costume contest, participants must register on-site at 6 p.m. Parents of minors competing in the contest must complete a permission form on-site. Judging begins at 7 p.m. Real or replica functional weapons are not allowed, and fake props must be constructed entirely of safe, lightweight materials like plastic, foam or cardboard.

All event activities are free and open to the public. Parking is available in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Parking Garage. For more information, contact museum staff members at (936) 468-2408 or stonefort@sfasu.edu.
