April Artist Spotlight – Meet Weelynd McMullan!

Weelynd is the artist behind the “Toy Dinosaurs” show currently on display at Falling Star Gallery at the Nacogdoches Arts Collaborative. Displaying the toys themselves and the art they’ve inspired, he’s managed to combine two of his three main interests here. “Art, reptiles (and amphibians), and video games. That’s basically me,” he said laughing. Using an observational drawing approach, Weelynd’s portraits of these toys share the spotlight with the toys. “The toy dinosaurs are either realistic with moving parts and fine detail or they’re comically distorted and you get cartoon characters. I love them all.”
Weelynd is a local fine artist who has made a name for himself in illustration, portraiture and teaching. A graduate of Central Heights High School, and holding both BFA and MA degrees from Stephen F. Austin in art, Weelynd is currently Exhibition Coordinator of SFA Art Galleries, including the Ed & Gwen Cole Art Center @ the Old Opera House and the Adams Gallery on campus, as well as an on campus lecturer. He is also a member of the board of the Nacogdoches Arts Collaborative.
Although Weelynd lacks a home studio at the moment, his creative spirit can’t be slowed down. His urge to draw is constant, so he carries a sketchbook and uses small snatches of time while waiting in line or being left on hold as opportunities to draw. “I have been drawing compulsively since I was a kid. I’m driven to do it, and frankly, I hope I always will be. Sometimes I’ll work while listening to music or while doing any other activity that doesn’t require my whole brain.”
“The Nacogdoches Arts Collaborative has been extremely supportive of my work,” he went on to say. “It’s great to have such an organization in town to support local artists of all stripes. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue working with them as an artist and as a board member to bring the arts to life in our little town.”
Nacogdoches Arts Collaborative is located inside Williamsburg Plaza, 320 North Street. Falling Star Gallery @ NAC is in Suite 306 and is open Saturdays from 11-4 or by appointment by texting 917-209-1050. We are also an easy walk from downtown at 415 N. Fredonia Street, one block north of the Fredonia Hotel. The NAC Annex is at 141 Walker Avenue behind the Fredonia Brewery.
