NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin men’s golf team finished first overall in the team rankings at the La Tour Intercollegiate in Matthews, Louisiana. The Lumberjacks finished -13 under par with a team total of 851 strokes through the three rounds of play.
The men won the tournament in dominant fashion finishing six strokes less than the second-place team. Out of the seven representatives at the tournament this weekend (five team and two individuals) six out of the seven finished inside of the top 15. This was the first event win for the men’s team since the 2014-15 season.
Senior Jake Smelser was the top finisher for the ‘Jacks finishing in 2nd place at -6 under par with a total of 210 strokes for the tournament. Junior Cameron Hubbard followed Smelser, finishing tied for 3rd place at -5 under par with 211 strokes on the tournament and going -3 under par in his final round to finish tied for 3rd. Senior Jaxon Griffith finished in 7th place at -2 under par and 214 total strokes. Junior Trey Rouse finished tied for 12th place finishing at even par for the tournament and 216 total strokes. Junior Jonathan Shuskey rounded out the team scoring finishing tied for 35th place +9 over par and 225 total strokes on the weekend.Eyan Edsall and Ryan Esparza competed as individuals in the event. Edsall finished tied for 8th place at -1 under par on the weekend and 215 total strokes. Esparza finished tied for 12th at even par and 216 total strokes.
The men concluded their fall tournament schedule this weekend with the win and will be back in action at the Bentwater Intercollegiate in Montgomery, Texas February 12th-13th.
