ALBUQUEREQUE, New Mexico- The Lumberjacks took part in the New Mexico Classic, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The meet started on February 3rd and wrapped up February 4th.
The Lumberjacks only travelled with their pole vault unit, along with Senior Nissi Kabongo. Head Coach Robert Hansen was pleased with the athletes brought to New Mexico and thought they “did a really nice job competing”.
Seniors Branson Ellis and Erica Ellis improved their best marks in the pole vault. Branson Ellis placed third, hitting a mark of 5.63m. Erica Ellis was able to place fourth, with a mark of 4.24m. Branson Ellis leads the men in the WAC by more than two feet, while Erica Ellis leads the women in the WAC by over a foot.
Senior Nissi Kabongo competed for the women in both the 400m dash and the high jump. She placed fourth in high jump, with a mark of 1.81m. Coach Hansen said, “Nissi had good competition, whereby she tied her season best from last week”. Kabongo also made her track debut, competing in the 400m dash. She finished with a time of 55.46. Kabongo currently ranks second in the WAC for the 400m, in addition to leading the WAC in the high jump.
The Lumberjacks will travel next to the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The meet will be hosted by the University of Arkansas on February 10th.
