NACOGDOCHES, Texas – California Baptist defeated Stephen F. Austin 10-1 in game one of the weekend series as the ‘Jacks struggle to hold the Lancers. CBU improves to 9-8 (WAC 3-1) and SFA falls to 6-12 (WAC 0-4).
The Lancers came out swinging right out of the gates as the second batter of the game knocked one out of the park for CBU, giving them an early 2-0. They didn’t stop there as the Lancers scored three more runs in the third inning with a couple of singles, a walk, and a two-run double. After CBU put two more runs up in the fourth and one more in the fifth, the Lancers grew their lead to 8-0. Meanwhile, the ‘Jacks were only able to record two hits through five innings.
The Lumberjacks were finally able to string some hits together in the bottom of the sixth inning, and it started with Alex Rodgers reaching base after the Lancer third-basemen committed an error on a groundball. Clayton Loranger moved Rodgers over to second on an infield single and Cal Martin brought Rodgers in with a RBI single up the middle. The ‘Jacks had a chance to put a second run up on the board with a single through the right side from Tom Biggs, but Loranger was thrown out at home from right field trying to score from second base.
Skip AdFollowing a couple of insurance runs for the Lancers in the seventh, CBU was able to hold off the Lumberjacks the last three innings to win the first game of the weekend series. The bats for the Lancers showed up today, as they were able to collect 10 runs on 14 hits. Four of those hits being for extra bases.
Three Lumberjacks were able to collect multiple base-hits this evening, Loranger leading the way with three hits in four at-bats. Martin and Cody Fleischer each picked up two hits on the day.
SFA will look to bounce back against CBU in game two tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
