Ladyjacks Return Home Fresh Off Dominating Win

NACOGDOCHES, Texas. – The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks Basketball team returns home for a game as they face off against the Rice University Owls.  

Ladyjacks at a Glance:

Stephen F. Austin will look to build off a dominating win over Texas Southern on Wednesday. In the game against the Tigers, SFA led in fast break points (13-12), points in the paint (38-20), bench points (16-4), three-point percentage (26.3-21.7), rebounds (50-31), blocks (3-1), and field goal percentage (44.1-28.6). 

Another game another dominating offensive performance from Kurstyn Harden who once again led the ‘Jacks in points. Harden put up an impressive 19 points on 8-10 shooting from the floor and pulled down five rebounds in addition. Destini Lombard and Tyler McCliment-Call both stuffed the statsheet for the Ladyjacks as Lombard finished with 14 points and dished out a team-leading seven assists, while McCliment-Call scored 11, including draining three three-pointers, while recording eight rebounds good for second most on the team. Zoe Nelson led the team in rebounds with an impressive 11 while Kyla Deck was active on defense with two steals and six rebounds. Trinity MooreJasmyne BolesMimi Gatewood, and Avery VanSickle all provided valuable minutes off the bench as all four recorded double-digit minutes against the Tigers. 

Overall, the Ladyjacks crashed the boards the entire night as they had a season-high 50 rebounds on the night as all five Ladyjack starters recorded at least one rebound. The Ladyjacks shot at a solid 44.1% clip from the field, while also draining 16 shots from the charity stripe as they cruised past TSU. The Ladyjacks continue to get solid scoring down low as they have now recorded 25 or more points in the paint in all four games this season.

This win for the Ladyjacks marked the first career road win for Head Coach Leonard Bishop as they scored over 15 points in each of the four quarters on Wednesday night. The Ladyjacks currently rank 23rd in the nation in turnovers forced per game as they average 23 turnovers forced per game. The ‘Jacks also rank 12thin the nation in turnover margin as they have a plus nine rating so far this season. Kyla Deck ranks seventh in the entire nation in Total Steals as she has recorded 19 steals on the season and ranks third in the nation in steals per game with 4.75. 

Owls at a Glance:

The Rice University Owls will travel to Nacogdoches fresh off a solid 73-62 home win over Saint Mary’s on Sunday, a game which featured five lead changes and four times the score was tied. In their game against Saint Mary’s Rice led in rebounds (39-32), assists (16-14), steals (10-7), second chance points (16-9), fast break points (6-4), and points off turnovers (28-13). 

Maya Bokunewicz exploded for Rice against Saint Mary’s as she came off the bench and played in 28 minutes while leading the team in points with 26 as she drained seven shots from behind the arc. Destiny Jackson and Dominique Ennis also had solid games as Jackson finished with 11 points and five rebounds, while Ennis had 13 points and four steals, which was the most by any Rice player. Malia Fisher was active on pulling down rebounds as she led the team with nine. 

Rice finished the game shooting 37.9% from the field, an impressive 40% from downtown, and shot a solid 73.3% from the free-throw line. The Owl’s double-digit steals led to a solid 28 points off turnovers, and they had more offensive rebounds (20) than defensive rebounds (19), which turned into 16 second chance points. 

Series: This will be the tenth meeting between these two schools and the first time Rice will make the trip to the Sawmill since 2015. The two schools met last season which saw Rice claim a 89-77 win on their homecourt.
