Obituary
Janie Mae (Owens) Kenner passed away June 7, 2024 at the age of 81 years. She was born July 8, 1942 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to her parents James Carlton Owens and Rosa Lee Branton Owens.
Janie received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Stephen F. Austin State University in home economics education. She earned a doctoral degree in textiles and clothing from Texas Woman’s University in 1990. Her career at SFA spanned 30 years. Janie received the College of Education Teaching Excellence Award in 2004, and the School of Human Sciences Teaching Excellence Award in 1997 and 2004. She was a member of the Phi Upsilon Omicron and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies.
Janie also served as a home economics teacher with the Huntington, Central Heights and Nacogdoches ISDs and as a home demonstration agent with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.
As a lifetime educator, her interests included cultural clothing, textiles and historic costumes. Janie loved sewing, growing flowers and nurturing her family.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daughters of 1812 and the SFA University Woman’s Club.
Janie is survived by her daughters, Audry Adams and Melinda Wiebold and husband Kirk; grandchildren, Taylor Adams, Leighton Adams, Lynsie Wiebold and Jessica Wiebold Maulsby and husband Drew; great-grandchildren, Hadley Maulsby and Beckett Maulsby; brother, James Aubrey Owens; brothers-in-law, John Kenner and wife Sherry and Vernon Kenner and wife Lynn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband James Kenner; siblings, Evie May and Dianne Lovett.
The family will receive friends, Monday, June 10, 2024, from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Funeral Services will be held, 10:00 AM, Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at Calvary Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Upper Chireno Cemetery.
