Janice Moore Obituary

Funeral services for Janice Moore, 89, of Gainesville will be Monday April 13, 2026 at 2 PM, at the O.T. Allen & Son Funeral Chapel in Alto, Texas. Burial will follow at the Old Palestine Cemetery near Alto. The family will receive visitors from 1-2 PM before the service begins. Janice was born to Woodrow Wilson Henson and Myrtle Adelle Reynolds (Dinah) on 12 Feb 1937, in Alto. She was a twin to Janette and had 5 other siblings- Alvin, Clara, Georgia, Marvin, and a brother, Rudolph- who passed shortly after birth. She is survived by one sister, Marvin. Her family moved from Alto to Dallas; where she lived until she moved to Gainesville in the early 1970s. She and her husband, with help of many skilled family members; built a mortgage free 920sf cabin on 1.5ac of land on Moss Lake. She loved her home, where she lived until entering a nursing home in 2022. Janice had 2 daughters, Deborah and Rinda; 7 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild. Having grown up in the Depression, she had a strong work ethic. She was very resourceful and lived by the motto, “Waste not, Want not.’’ Nothing was disposed of until it could no longer be repaired, or if it could serve another purpose. She was well known for picking up things people put to the curb that still had life in them, ‘because someone might need that in the future.’  Janice worked for Color Dynamics when she retired. She commuted 4 hours a day from Gainesville to Allen, 6 days a week, with one weekend off per month. She spent her free time maintaining her property, fishing, and making useful things for family and friends, like blankets. Janice lived a life of ‘Paying It Forward’.There’s probably not a single member of our family that she hasn’t helped at some point in her life. When she visited she made herself useful. Cleaning your kitchen, organizing the garage, weeding your flower bed.  Her philanthropy extended into her community. She modeled this for me early- by taking in several of my friends who were on the outs with their parents, to get them off the streets and keep them safe. My friends often sought her out to tell their problems to. She was truly the neighborhood mom. After retirement, she was a driver for her friends, taking them to appointments and activities. She attended a weekly bible study with the neighbor ladies. Janice and her sister, Marvin, made annual treks to the Old Palestine cemetery in Alto to place beautiful homemade flower arrangements on the graves of family members. She made an annual donation to the Old Palestine Church for cemetery maintenance. She generously supported her church, Bear Head Baptist. Tithing both monetarily and with good deeds. She participated in the maintenance of the Bear Head cemetery. She donated to numerous charities. She gathered donations of shoes and clothes to send to Africa. She supported the Arts in her community and was particularly fond of live theater. Janice’s family ask that you make memorials to your favorite charity or cause in lieu of flowers.
