In the Care of Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors
James Taylor Cates, 86, of Nacogdoches, TX passed away late Tuesday, September 1st, 2026 in the comfort of his home, surrounded by the love of his devoted family.
Mr. Cates was born to Ferris and Annie Cates of Clawson, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Patsy Cates; and his brothers, Joe B. Cates and Donny Cates, Billy Cates and James Clift Norwood.
He is survived by his son, Donald Norwood and wife, Sandy, of Etoile; his daughter, Sandy Morgan and husband, Andre, of Houston; and his brothers, Bobby Cates of Lufkin and Charles Douglas Cates of Zavalla.
James Taylor, as everyone knew him, was a man who understood the meaning of hard work, loyalty, and dedication. He devoted his life to providing for his family and built a remarkable career at Lufkin Industries. During his years there, he once achieved 30 years of perfect attendance without missing a single day of work. He ultimately retired after an extraordinary 55 years of service, having earned the greatest seniority of anyone on the company’s payroll.
James Taylor took pride in showing up, doing his job, and doing it well. That strong work ethic did not end when he left the workplace each day. At home he passed those same values on to his children while caring for the family’s properties and working in the garden. Through hard work, shared responsibilities, and time spent together, he helped keep his family close and created memories that will remain with them for generations.
On Tuesday, September 1st, 2026 James Taylor went peacefully to be with our Lord and Savior. His strength, devotion, and remarkable example of a life well worked and well-loved will never be forgotten.
