NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Utah Tech defeated Stephen F. Austin 47-44 in Western Athletic Conference action.
The ‘Jacks fall to 5-4 and 2-1 in WAC play, while UTU improves 2-6 and 1-2 in conference.
SFA received a standout performance from All-American and Walter Payton Award Watch List nominee Xavier Gipson. The Dallas, Texas product generated 270 total yards – 151 receiving and 119 punt return, including an 85-yard punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Gipson also eclipsed the 4000-career receiving mark in the first quarter.
The Lumberjack offense generated 592 total yards and averaged 7.1 yards per play.
Miles Reed rushed for 110 yards and one touchdown and freshman Jerrell Wimbley added 78 yards and two touchdowns.
Trae Self completed 31-of-44 passes for a career-high 391 yards to go along with one touchdown.
Self distributed the ball to nine different pass-catchers.
Reed was a factor out of the back field with eight receptions for 78 receiving yards and one touchdown. Chad Aune added four receptions for 36 yards, and Jeremiah Miller recorded four receptions for 30 yards. Reed totaled 188 yards of total offense.
Chris Campos converted three field goals from 45 yards, 37 yards, and 26 yards.
Triumphant Olatunji added a team-high 5.5 tackles and one QB hurry.
SFA enters a bye week and returns to the gridiron on Saturday, November 12 and host Central Arkansas at 4 p.m.
