Family Crisis Center of East Texas Hosts “Safe Summer Break” Event at SFA

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS (April 13th, 2026) – Janelle Grum Family Crisis Center of East Texas will host Safe Summer Break on Thursday, April 23 from 7–9 p.m. at the Stephen F. Austin State University Recreation Center, sending college students off prepared for summer by learning how to stay proactive about their personal safety and where to turn if they or a friend ever need support.

Safe Summer Break brings together community organizations and campus resources to connect students with important information in a fun, welcoming setting. Attendees can visit booths hosted by local organizations, pick up safety resources, enjoy free food and drinks, play games, and take part in giveaways before heading into summer break.

The event is held during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about sexual violence and supporting survivors. According to national statistics, 1 in 5 women in college experience sexual assault during their time in school. Through events like Safe Summer Break, the Family Crisis Center of East Texas works to promote prevention, awareness, and support while encouraging conversations that lead to safer communities.

This year’s event will also highlight the agency’s Consent Is Not Confusing campaign, an initiative focused on reinforcing that consent must be clear, voluntary, and communicated by all parties. The campaign aims to educate students and community members about the importance of clear communication and respect in relationships, helping prevent sexual violence before it occurs.

Last year’s event welcomed a wide range of community partners who shared resources and support services with students, including Unbound Now, Stephen F. Austin State University Police Department, Burke, the Stephen F. Austin State University Health and Wellness Hub, Alcohol & Drug Abuse Council of Deep East Texas, and Brown Family Health Center, among many others.

By bringing together campus and community organizations, Safe Summer Break helps ensure students leave campus informed, empowered, and supported as they head into the summer months.
