Charlene Joye Humphreys was born in Crossett, Arkansas, on November 9, 1929. She went home to be with Christ on Monday, December 30, 2024. She was greatly loved by her family, her church family, the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary volunteers, the hospital staff and employees and many friends throughout the community. She will be missed. A written inscription found on back of a picture dated 1957 by her daughter exemplifies the love felt for her. It read “My beloved mother, who devoted her life, strength, health and love to her family who shall never be able to realize how much she gave.” After graduation from Longview High School at the age of sixteen, she entered Texas Christian University. During her freshman year she met Rex Humphreys who would become her sweetheart and husband of sixty-four years. They reared a family of three children, a daughter Joycelyn H. Claer and two sons, Richard Rex and Jonathan Mark. Moving to Nacogdoches in 1976, Rex had answered a call to be the Senior Minister of First Christian Church and Joye accepted a position with the NISD in the Special Education Department. While teaching, she was considered a Master Teacher and performed many demonstrations and techniques she used to Stephen F. Austin students majoring in Education. She touched many lives and taught thirty two years before retiring. Not only was she involved with teaching, she was active in the life of the church. Joye loved the Lord and His church. She demonstrated her love in many ways within the church family. She taught Sunday School Classes of all ages and for twenty eighy years devoted her teaching to the beloved Martha Class for women. Today, the class has honored her with her picture placed within a beautiful cabinet in the church gathering area. She was a Deaconess and for many years served in different leadership roles in the Christian Women’s Fellowship. Joye was also involved in community service. She was an active member of the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, having served as President four terms as well as serving in other offices. She was a Texas Association of Hospital Volunteers board member for twelve years and held the office of Corresponding Secretary for two terms. In addition, she acted as the chaplain for the State Board.
Joye was preceded in death by her loving husband, Rev. Rex Humphreys and son, Jonathan Mark. She is survived by a daughter, Joycelyn H. Claer; son Richard Rex & daughter in law, Debbie; grandsons, Robert Garrett Claer and William Rex and her “favorite” granddaughter, Regan.
Our love and thanks to all who showed their love to Mother, Mom and Gran. She loved you all.
