Carolyn Sue Still King was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and teacher. She was born March 30th, 1938, to Malcolm Martel Still and Muriel Evelyn Warr Still in Nacogdoches, Texas.
Carolyn’s love for the Lord was apparent at a very young age. Her mother credited Carolyn with influencing her father to begin attending church, which led him to accept Jesus as his Savior. From that day on, he became a faithful servant of the Lord.
Carolyn also showed a love for learning, earning many academic achievements, including graduating as valedictorian of her high school in Crowley, Louisiana. On the very day of her high school graduation, Carolyn began taking college classes at Southwestern Louisiana Institute in Lafayette, where she majored in Home Economics and later earned her master’s degree from Stephen F. Austin State University.
How talented she was! She was not only a wonderful cook, but she could sew the most beautiful clothing—pieces that would outshine store-brought frocks. And if you wanted something that was plaid and the plaids did not align, forget it! She was not buying it! There was nothing she could not do. She was always willing to make whatever her girls dreamed up. She would spend hours at the sewing machine and never complained—even with the most tedious tasks.
Carolyn was a dedicated teacher and shared her homemaking talents with her students at Nacogdoches High School for 25 years. To this day, former students still have fond memories of having our mother as their teacher.
The love our mother and father had for one another was to be admired. She married Tommy Aaron King on November 25, 1960, and they built a beautiful life together for 64 years. Whether it was traveling through the Ozark Mountains to their favorite destination of Branson, Missouri, or simply spending a quiet night at home, they were happy because they were together. We are brokenhearted by her passing, but we are at peace knowing she has been reunited with our sweet dad in Heaven.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents and her youngest brother, Don Willis Still.
She was a loving mother to Cammie (Paul) Hicks of Richmond, Texas; Kent (Karen) King of Hudson; and Carol (Terry) Matthews of Douglass. Carolyn has also been reunited with her dearly departed son, Craig (Sharrone).
She loved and doted on her grandchildren and never turned down an opportunity to babysit: Kyle (Cordava) King, Clay (Lauren) Hicks, Chris (Nicole) King, Cole (Lindsey) Hicks, Kalyn (Jared) Johnson, Cooper (Lily) Hicks, Bryce (Logan Ivy) Barham, Luke (Malia) Barham, and Britt King.
Carolyn was also so proud to be Gram to her ten great-grandchildren, with another due any day. She leaves behind her sister, Jan (Earl) Still King; her brother, Charles Still (Cheryl), sister-in-law Connie Still; and many nieces and nephews, all of whom loved her deeply.
Pallbearers will be Kyle King, Chris King, Clay Hicks, Cole Hicks, Cooper Hicks, Luke Barham, Britt King, Sergio Alva, and Jared Johnson.
The family would like to acknowledge Carolyn’s compassionate and loving caregivers: Torrie Gipson, Mechelle Robers, Tina Miller, Dr. Mark Cline, Erin Somerlatte, PA, and the wonderful staff at Harbor Hospice.
Carolyn peacefully left her earthly home on September 28th, 2026. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 3rd, 2026, at Laird Funeral Home with Paul Hicks officiating. Visitation will be held at 10:00 am, with the funeral service following at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Search Ministries—Houston Area, Nacogdoches Treatment Center, and Calvary Baptist Church, Nacogdoches.
