Recruiters representing 32 firms, colleges and branches of the U.S. military were on hand Thursday, April 13, at the Youth Career Summit at Malcolm Rector Center for Advanced Careers and Innovation at Nacogdoches High School.
NHS collaborated with Workforce Solutions Deep East Texas on the job fair and career summit for the second year in a row.
The job fair provided juniors and seniors at NHS and Margie Chumbley Academy for Success, including soon-to-be graduates, an opportunity to practice interview skills while seeing what employment opportunities are available in Nacogdoches County.
“It is likely that many of our students walk away with a solid lead or offer for a job or internship, since a majority of the businesses in attendance have positions ready to be filled,” said Coy Van Valkenburgh, the district’s Director of Career & Technical Education. “It’s an opportunity for our students, even those preparing for college, to connect with local businesses.
“The summit focuses on prepping students for tomorrow’s workforce, and we appreciate all of our partners who take part in events like this one.”
Last month, students practiced for the career summit with mock interviews conducted by Nacogdoches area business partners and NISD staff.
Three other county school districts – Woden, Martinsville and Cushing – also sent students to Thursday’s career summit.
Employers attending the career summit included:
Girl Scouts of San Jacinto, Boys & Girls Club, Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Universal Technical Institute/MIAT, Academy of Hair Design, Great Clips and Super Cuts.
Also, Pilgrim’s Pride, Willowbrook Nursing Home, Christus Health, Texas State Technical College, City of Nacogdoches, U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marines, Stephen F. Austin State University, NIBCO, Job Corps, Texas Department of Transportation and Advanced Temporaries.
Also, Workforce Solutions WIOA, TFP Nutrition, Christian Women’s Job Corps of Nacogdoches, Whataburger, Cannon CPR Training and Services, Stephen F.
