Obituary
Funeral service for Bob Barton, 89, of Garrison will be held at 10:00am on Monday, January 20, 2025 at Garrison First Baptist Church with Ben Richardson, John McGuire, and Gerold Edwards officiating. Interment will follow at Libby Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2:00pm to 4:00pm on Sunday, January 19, 2025 at Garrison First Baptist Church.
Bob Jarrett Barton, age 88, of Garrion, Texas passed away January 15, 2025 at Garrison Nursing Home. He was born in Garrison, Texas to the late Clara Patterson Barton and Kenneth Lavell (K.L.) Barton on May 1, 1936. Bob spent his childhood following closely behind his older brother, Kenneth. He graduated from Garrison High School in 1954 and went on to get his Master of Education from Stephen F. Austin State University. Bob married his high school sweetheart, Jo Ann Manning on September 14th, 1957 and had one daughter, Susan, in 1958. Bob worked at the College Grill at SFA and ran the family dairy while coaching and teaching at Garrison ISD. After teaching for 6 years, he bought a grocery store and a few years later decided to join the family business, K.L. Barton and Son’s Tie Company. Bob and Jo Ann enjoyed years of traveling around the world and experiencing different cultures and ways of life.
Though he is remembered as being a kind and humble servant, Bob was an active and profound member of the community accepting many awards and recognitions throughout the years. He was a Sunday School teacher and deacon at First Baptist Church Garrison, served on the Garrison ISD School Board, a member of the Garrison Lion’s Club, and served as a board member for Heritage Land Bank. Some recognitions include, Citizen of the Year Award, Masonic Lodge Builder’s Award, Family Farm of The Year Award, Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce Pete Smith Agriculture Pioneer Award in 2007, and numerous awards for crossties and pallets while operating Barton Tie Company.
Following the sudden death of his brother Kenneth in 1987, he became Fire Chief until 2002 but continued to serve for many years. Bob was one of the charter members of the Garrison EMT and Ambulance Service after being trained by Dr. L.W. Snider.
Bob’s pride and joy outside of his loving wife and daughter, were his 3 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, K.L. and Clara Barton, and brother, Kenneth Barton.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Barton. Susan Chandler and husband, Terry. Grandchildren, Chelsey Brewer and husband Heath, Wes Chandler and wife Tiffani, Nash Chandler and wife, Melissa. Great grandchildren, Luccasey Brewer, Jace Chandler, Conley Brewer, Cabela Brewer, Kipley Chandler, Jud Chandler, and Doc Chandler all of Garrison, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are Heath Brewer, Wes Chandler, Nash Chandler, Luccasey Brewer, Jace Chandler, Bradley Barton, and Cameron Barton. Honorary Pallbearers include Smokey Beard, Herbert Perley, Mark McFadden, Huey Hancock, Steve Sheriff, Jesse Stokes, the Gipson boys, Billy Ray Griffith and Olan Woodard.
