NACOGDOCHES, Texas– Stephen F. Austin kicked off their series this afternoon vs New Mexico State. The Jacks won comfortably 8-1, moved to 23-21 on the year and 11-8 in the conference. New Mexico State dropped to 19-22, and 8-11 in conference play.
The game was a pitcher’s duel early on, as the score remained 0-0 going into the fourth. Jayleen Burton singled to start the fourth for the Aggies, and Jillian Taylor knocked her in with a single of her own later in the inning. That was all the runs the Aggies could get on the day though, as Alexis Telford pitched all seven innings, only allowing the one run. In the bottom half of the fourth, Mackenzie Bennett tied the game with a solo home run. The ‘Jacks continued to pour on in the fifth, as Bennett tacked on another run with a single, and Lexi Benson doubled home two more. In the sixth, Gaby Garcia walked with the bases loaded to put the Jacks up 5-1, and Bennett continued her monster day with a bases-clearing double, putting the Lumberjacks up 8-1. Bennett finished the game 3-3 with a double and five RBI’s.
SFA will look to win the series tomorrow, as they play a doubleheader. Game 1 starts at 11 a.m. and game 2 will follow at 1:30 p.m.
