Residents invited to plant a tree, grow a legacy, and help preserve the natural beauty of East Texas.

Lufkin, TX – Angelina Beautiful/Clean (AB/C), a local nonprofit, invites residents to celebrate Texas Arbor Day on Friday, November 6, 2026, with a free community tree giveaway at Lowe’s in Lufkin. The event is part of the organization’s ongoing Reforest Lufkin initiative, encouraging residents to plant trees, care for their landscapes, and help preserve the natural beauty of East Texas for future generations.

While National Arbor Day is celebrated in April, Texas Arbor Day is observed on the first Friday in November, recognizing that fall and winter offer some of the best conditions for planting trees in our state, especially in our Deep East Texas Region!

Why Plant Trees in the Fall?

“In East Texas, fall is one of the best times to plant trees because cooler temperatures and typically more favorable moisture conditions allow newly planted trees to establish their root systems before the intense summer heat arrives.” Says Texas A&M District Forester Zack Ovelgonne who both serves on the AB/C board and helps facilitate the tree giveaways twice a year. Although growth above ground may slow during the cooler months, roots can continue developing when soil conditions are favorable. Planting in November gives trees several months to establish themselves before facing the stress of another East Texas summer.

Why Trees Matter in Our Community

Trees are one of East Texas’s most valuable natural resources, and their benefits extend far beyond the beauty they bring to our landscapes. Planting trees in our neighborhoods, backyards, parks, and public spaces helps:

  • Provide shade and reduce energy costs by keeping homes and outdoor spaces cooler during hot Texas summers.
  • Improve air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and filtering certain air pollutants.
  • Support local wildlife by providing food and shelter for birds, pollinators, and other native species.
  • Reduce stormwater runoff and soil erosion by helping absorb rainfall and protect the soil.
  • Enhance property values and neighborhood beauty while creating inviting outdoor spaces for families and future generations.

“Living in East Texas, we are incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by beautiful forests and trees, but it is easy to take them for granted,” said Emily Harmon, Executive Director of Angelina Beautiful/Clean. “Texas Arbor Day is a wonderful reminder that preserving the beauty of our community starts right in our own backyards. Planting a tree today is a simple investment and a promise to future generations to leave the world a little better than we found it.”

Growing a Greener Lufkin

Through the Reforest Lufkin initiative, Angelina Beautiful/Clean works alongside community partners and local businesses to encourage responsible tree planting, environmental education, and the preservation and expansion of our local tree canopy. The November 6 tree giveaway provides residents with an opportunity to take part in these efforts by planting a tree on their own property. The organization also encourages residents to participate in their upcoming Reforest Lufkin Tree Planting happening on November 14th at Kit McConnico Park. Further Details can be found on AB/C’s social media and website platforms.
