Alford Byron Porterfield was born on August 21, 1937 in Timpson, Texas the son of John Lacy and Jessie Ophelia Porterfield.  As a child, he grew up in the Garrison and Timpson area and then Nacogdoches during his teenage years where he attended school and worked delivering telegrams for Western Union around town on his bicycle.

He met a young woman, Dorothy Mae Faires, and the two fell in love.  On June 5, 1959 they joined their lives together and began their family.  Early in the marriage, Byron joined the Army National Guard.  Byron was a patriot and very proud of the country he served.  He worked on the vehicles in his unit and was a tow truck driver.  He was honored to be ranked as a Spec 5.

Byron’s love of country led him to discover his mechanical abilities.  He chose to pursue a career in auto mechanics and went to work for Wedgeworth Buick in Nacogdoches.  In 1966, he and Dorothy established Nacogdoches Transmission Service, where they worked side by side until their children took the reins of the business.  This was about the time they were blessed with grandchildren and their life was again filled with the laughter and joy of having children around.  He and Dorothy began to take time away from everything else and load up the 4 grandkids in the truck with the travel trailer and take them on vacations every summer.  He loved having them around and was very proud of his children and grandchildren.

Byron was a simple man who loved his Lord & Savior and was a song leader at church.  He thoroughly enjoyed gospel music and singing hymns.  He was happiest when he was surrounded by those he loved the most having ice cream “dinners” or simply enjoying each other.  He had a great passion for rebuilding old cars which kept him busy because he was not a man with idle hands.  His love of family, God and country will forever be the greatest things his family remembers of the man who taught them everything.

Byron is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Mae Porterfield; son, Jack Porterfield & wife, Jeanne; daughter, Brenda Kittrell & husband, James; grandchildren, Brandon Kittrell & wife, Bethannie of Avon, Ohio, Nicole Thomas & husband, Chase of Mineola, Natasha Perkins & husband, Joseph of Nacogdoches and Ty Porterfield & wife, Kaitlyn of Nacogdoches and great grandchildren, Kylie, Atalie, Dane, Luke and Noah.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Jessie Porterfield.
