Alex Luna Resigns as Head Beach Volleyball Coach

NACOGDOCHES, Texas-Alex Luna has resigned as head coach of the Stephen F. Austin beach volleyball program. A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately.

“I would like to thank Alex for his work and effort in getting our beach volleyball program started, said SFA Director of Athletics, Ryan Ivey. “Starting a program from scratch is no small task and Alex was able to do so in a productive and efficient manner.  We certainly wish him well in his new venture and opportunities. As we move forward with our coaching search, we will be looking for someone that is able to take our program where it currently stands and grow it in the manner in which it, and our student-athletes, deserve.”

Luna was SFA’s first head coach of the beach volleyball program and oversaw conference moves from Southland to the ASUN and into the Sun Belt last season. Overall, he amassed a career record of 34-48 including making a second-round appearance in the Sun Belt Tournament last season.

Ivey is excited for the future of the program, “When we started the program, we invested heavily into our beach facility with four courts, lights and spectator seating, in addition to securing private funding for an expanded locker room.  While our program is young, we certainly believe that with our location in Texas, great campus and recent affiliation with the University of Texas System, I am confident that we will have the ability to attract a high caliber coach to elevate our program.  The future continues to be bright for SFA, our athletics department and beach volleyball program.”
