Health Inspection Report Week of 12/16/2025

The Inspection Services Department carries out the general health & safety inspections of occupancies requiring a health permit within the jurisdiction of the City of Nacogdoches. The primary function of the Health Inspector is the interpretation, inspection and field compliance efforts of the technical codes and laws. These codes and laws are Federal, State and Local. In addition the Health Inspector with support from the Inspection Services Department carries out the responsibility of data entry, account billing and record keeping.

Health Inspections: Local Restaurants and Schools Receive Mixed Results

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Recent health inspections across North Street, University Drive, and surrounding areas revealed a wide range of compliance levels among local restaurants, schools, and childcare facilities. While several establishments earned near-perfect marks, others were cited for multiple violations requiring corrective action.

Highest Demerits

  • North Food Mart (5105 North Street) received 16 demerits, the highest in this round of inspections. Issues included inadequate hot water in the men’s restroom, improperly labeled self-serve food products, missing use-by dates, and damaged ceiling tiles. Inspectors also discarded multiple expired food items on site.
  • Super Yummy (4604 North Street, Suite #110) was cited for 11 demerits, including improper food storage in walk-in coolers and freezers, blocked handwashing sink access, and scattered trash behind the dumpster. Several violations were corrected immediately.

Moderate Demerits

  • Jalapeño Tree (637 North University Drive) received 7 demerits, with problems ranging from damaged flooring to scattered trash and dirty vents.
  • Chicken Express (1614 North University Drive) was cited for 4 demerits, including missing ceiling tiles and dirty fans.
  • Jalisco Tacos (1003 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard) earned 4 demerits, with inspectors noting employee phones in food prep areas and a damaged bathroom door.
  • KI Mini Mart #1 (2830 North Street) also received 4 demerits, with issues including missing thermometers, dirty microwaves, and water-damaged ceiling tiles.
  • Taco Casa (1133 North University Drive) was cited for 3 demerits, including a broken handwashing sink and open dumpster lids.
  • Tropical Smoothie Café (4415 North Street, Suite #101) received 3 demerits, including improper scoop storage and one discarded canned food product.
  • Homegrown Coffee Co. Drink Trailer (Pool Real Estate Property) earned 3 demerits, primarily for missing test strips, though paperwork and logs were compliant.

Minimal Demerits

  • Domino’s Pizza (2403 North Street) received 2 demerits for a dirty vent and a damaged floor area.
  • Handprints Academy Building #1 (1118 Tanglewood Circle) was cited for 2 demerits, including missing ceiling tiles.
  • Handprints Academy Buildings #2 and #3 (1118 Tanglewood Circle) received 3 demerits, with inspectors noting broken timbers, hanging limbs, and a missing thermometer.

Schools and Childcare Facilities

  • Pre School Express (5124 North Street) earned 1 demerit for damaged flooring and walls.
  • Sonshine School (3914 North Street) stood out with 0 demerits, achieving 100 percent compliance.
