Work to widen and improve several miles of US 259 in northern Nacogdoches County is expected to get underway in November.

Austin, Texas-based contractor Posillico Civil, Inc., will head up the project. Their crews will begin preparing the right-of-way beginning Monday, Nov. 9. The work is expected to be completed in fall 2031. Project schedules may change due to weather and material availability.

The project is designed to enhance freight mobility, provide a more efficient hurricane-evacuation route, and reduce congestion for approximately 6.77 miles of US 259 between State Highway (SH) 204 and the Rusk County line.

The work includes adding a 16-foot-wide continuous two-way left-turn lane and 10-foot-wide shoulders to US 259. The SH 204/US 259 intersection will be reconfigured to include a traffic signal. Right turn lanes will be added at Farm-to-Market Road (FM) 2664 and FM 1087 as well.

Drivers should plan for lane closures and changing traffic patterns as the project progresses. Slow down when traveling in and near the work zones and stay alert for workers and equipment moving in the area.
