TOURISM BOOSTING NACOGDOCHES ECONOMY
One of the things I enjoy most about serving on the City Council is seeing all the work that goes on behind the scenes to improve our community. Here’s a good example. Ranked as one of the top tourist destinations in Texas by readers of Texas Highways Magazine, Nacogdoches has posted strong hotel performance over the first three quarters of the year. Even while new accommodation options have opened in the hotel corridor on the south side of town, the Nacogdoches Convention and Visitors Bureau reports that hotel occupancy has shown an increase each month over the same month of the previous year for 11 of the past 12 months. That trend mirrors the outcome of a survey of Texas Highways readers that landed Nacogdoches between New Braunfels and Fredericksburg as the number seven most popular tourist destination in Texas. The CVB’s primary purpose is to increase the number of overnight stays in the city through a marketing strategy to attract overnight visitors, families, conferences and SFA-related travel from outside the community. The year’s accomplishment is one of which we can all be proud.
SALES TAX RECEIPTS CONTINUE UPWARD TREND
Sales tax receipts for the City of Nacogdoches for October 2026 are up more than seven percent over last month and up almost 10 percent for the year. This report shows Nacogdoches doing well economically compared to many of our peers around the state.
WITH GROWTH COMES INCREASED TRAFFIC
If you drive on North Street, and most all of us do, you may have noticed what feels like an increase in traffic volume. Yes, it’s something we experience every fall with the return of school and the influx of SFA students. This year, however, there seems to be a more noticeable change. While there are no studies yet to support it, the number of accidents and the number of cars on the streets certainly speak for themselves. So, what are we to do to accommodate more vehicles around us? City staff recommends using streets with lower traffic volume when possible, using University Drive or Pearl Street, for example, rather than North Street at busy times of the day. Showing more patience and giving ourselves more time to get to our destination can also help. Mobility is important to all of us and working together, we can all get where we are wanting to go, safely.
THANKSGIVING & CHRISTMAS ARE AROUND THE CORNER
Don’t look now but the holidays are coming fast. That means the Nine Flags Christmas Festival returns throughout November and December with holiday lights, shopping, entertainment and seasonal activities across our town. Your city staff will be busy helping plan for and provide support for many of the events and
performances. It’s a great time to live in the Oldest Town in Texas.
UPCOMING CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS
The Nacogdoches City Council will meet in regular session on Tuesday, November 3 and on Tuesday, November 17 at 5:30 pm in City Hall. This is your city and your city council. Meetings are open to the public and are a great way to learn more about what your council is doing and how it affects you and the
community we all love.
