Beloved Mother, Nonnie, and Friend

With heavy hearts full of wonderful memories, we announce the passing of our mother Katherine Anne Commander on February 9, 2024.  She was a source of love, compassion, and unwavering strength.  She touched our lives in immeasurable ways. Anne was born on November 22, 1948, in Dalhart, TX.

She was affectionately named Anne (with an E) after her mother’s favorite fictional character.  She enjoyed painting and learned to crochet and quilt from her mother and grandmother.  She leaves behind numerous handmade quilts and Christmas stockings for her children and grandchildren.

Anne retired from Stephen F. Austin State University where she was director of Postal Services and served as President of NACUMS.  Anne was a dear friend to many.  She was fun to be around and easy to talk to.  Her sharp wit and sense of humor drew people close to her.

As her children, we witnessed her boundless love and selflessness.  Anne always prioritized her children’s needs, providing comfort and guidance during challenging times.  Her love shaped us profoundly.

Anne’s role as Nonnie brought her immense joy.  She showered her grandchildren with love.  Her time was her greatest gift and she gave it freely.  She never missed a sports event and was the one person they could call for a spur-of-the-moment road trip.  Anne created cherished and lasting memories they will hold dear.

Anne is survived by her daughter, Carrie Leonard & husband Tim of Nacogdoches; son, Matt Commander of Nacogdoches and grandchildren, Evan Leonard, Grant Leonard, Tristian Smith, Analyse Commander and Grayson Commander all of Nacogdoches and her sister, Renee Hurst. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Commander; parents, Billie J. Bailey & Howard French and siblings, John French, Bob French and Deborah Strahan.

Serving as Pallbearers are Matt Commander, Tim Leonard, Evan Leonard, Grayson Commander, Tristian Smith, Chuck French, Josh French, and Greg French.
